Most businesses set up their Google Business Profile and then let it sit unchanged for months. The businesses that consistently outperform their competitors in local search have one habit in common: they post updates regularly. Google Business Profile posts are free, they influence rankings, and they give potential customers a reason to choose you over a competitor who looks inactive.

Why Posts Matter for Rankings and Conversion

Google interprets activity on your Business Profile as a signal of business health and engagement. Profiles that post regularly tend to have slightly higher rankings than identical inactive profiles. More importantly, when a customer is comparing two similar businesses, seeing recent posts — a completed project, a seasonal offer, a helpful tip — can be the deciding factor.

Posts appear directly on your profile in search results and on your Google Maps listing. A customer who finds your business and sees posts from the past two weeks feels more confident than one who finds a profile with no activity in six months.

Types of Posts and When to Use Them

Updates: General-purpose posts for sharing news, completed projects, company information, or helpful tips. These are the most commonly used type and work for almost any business.

Offers: Promotional posts with an optional redemption code or CTA button. Use for seasonal specials, first-time customer discounts, or referral incentives. Include a start and end date.

Events: For businesses hosting or participating in local events. Great for open houses, workshops, or community involvement.

Products: Showcase specific products with photos and pricing. Particularly useful for retail businesses or service businesses with defined service packages.

What to Write About

Content ideas that consistently perform well:

  • Before/after photos from recent projects
  • Tips relevant to your service (seasonal maintenance advice, common mistakes to avoid)
  • Customer success stories (with permission)
  • Answers to frequently asked questions
  • Local community involvement or sponsorships
  • Seasonal services or timely reminders ("Spring is the time to...")

Formatting Tips

  • Lead with value or a hook. The first sentence is what gets read. "Did you know most homeowners in Southern Oregon are missing this simple step to prevent winter pipe damage?" beats "We're a local plumbing company with 15 years of experience."
  • Include a photo. Posts with images get significantly more engagement. Use real photos — not stock images.
  • Add a call to action. Every post should end with a direction: "Call us this week," "Learn more on our website," "Book your appointment."
  • Keep it scannable. 100–300 words is ideal. Get to the point quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I post on Google Business Profile?

Two to four times per month is a strong cadence for most local businesses. Posting every week is excellent; posting monthly is acceptable. Daily posting is unnecessary for most businesses.

Do posts help me rank higher on Google?

Posts are a moderate ranking signal — primarily they signal profile activity and engagement to Google's algorithm. The bigger ranking factors (reviews, profile completeness, website SEO) matter more, but posts contribute.

Do posts expire?

Update and offer posts stay visible for 7 days before moving to a less prominent position, though they remain in your post history. Event posts stay active until the event ends. There's no need to delete old posts.

Can I schedule posts in advance?

Not through Google's native tools. Third-party tools like Hootsuite or Buffer can schedule GBP posts. You can also write a batch of posts and publish them manually on your desired cadence.
