Why Isn't My Google Business Profile Showing Up?

If your Google Business Profile isn't appearing in local search results or Google Maps, there are several likely causes — most of which you can fix yourself.

Your Google Business Profile is supposed to be your most powerful free marketing tool. When someone searches for your type of business in your city, your profile should appear in the local map pack — the three results that show up with a map. But for many businesses, the listing simply doesn't appear. Here's why, and what to do about it.

Your Profile Isn't Verified

Google requires every business to verify their profile before it becomes eligible to appear in search results. Verification is usually done via a postcard mailed to your business address, though phone and email verification are available for some businesses.

If you created a profile but never completed verification — or if the postcard arrived and you never used it — your listing is in a "pending verification" state that won't show up publicly. Log in to your Google Business Profile dashboard and check your verification status. If you're unverified, request a new verification code and complete the process.

Your Profile Was Suspended

Google suspends profiles that violate their guidelines. Common causes include: a business address that appears to be a residential location, a business name that includes keywords rather than your actual legal name, or suspicion of spam activity. A suspended profile is completely invisible in search results.

If your profile shows as "suspended" in the dashboard, you'll need to appeal through Google's reinstatement process. This involves submitting documentation proving your business is legitimate and operates from a real location. The process can take several weeks.

Your Business Category Is Too Vague or Incorrect

Google's algorithm uses your primary business category to determine which searches your profile is relevant for. If you've chosen a generic or inaccurate category — or if you haven't selected a primary category at all — your profile won't appear for the searches you're targeting.

Review your primary category and ensure it's as specific as possible. A plumbing company should be "Plumber," not "Home Services." Adding relevant secondary categories can also expand the searches you appear for without diluting your primary relevance.

Your Service Area Doesn't Include Your Target Location

If you're a service-area business (you go to customers rather than having a physical location they visit), your profile needs to have a properly configured service area. If you haven't set one, or if it doesn't include the cities where customers are searching for you, you simply won't appear for those searches.

Pair this with local SEO work on your website to maximize your visibility across your entire service region.

Your Profile Has No Reviews or Activity

Google's local ranking algorithm considers prominence — essentially, how well-known and respected your business appears to be. A profile with zero reviews, no photos, and no recent posts signals a business that may be inactive. These profiles are deprioritized in results in favor of active, review-rich competitors.

Getting your first handful of reviews and posting regular updates to your profile are the fastest ways to improve your ranking once you're verified and your profile is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have a Google Business Profile if I work from home?

Yes, but you'll need to list your service area rather than your home address, which should not be made public. Home-based businesses without a commercial address that customers visit should use the "service area business" setting.

How long does Google take to verify a profile by postcard?

Postcards typically arrive within 5–14 days. Once you receive the postcard and enter the code, verification is usually confirmed within 24 hours.

My profile shows up for my business name but not for general searches. Why?

Branded searches (your exact name) will almost always find your profile. Appearing for generic searches like "plumber Roseburg" requires a complete, optimized profile with reviews and possibly local SEO work on your website.

Do I need to post regularly on my profile?

Regular posts aren't strictly required, but they signal activity to Google and can improve your ranking slightly over time. Posting 2–4 times per month is a good habit.
