Get GBP help →Google Business Profile is the foundation of local search visibility. When someone searches for a service "near me" or in a specific city, Google pulls data from GBP profiles to populate the Local Pack — the map and top 3 business listings that appear above regular organic results. These Local Pack results get 44% of all local search clicks.
An optimized GBP profile signals to Google that your business is legitimate, active, and relevant to local searches. A neglected or incomplete profile — even if your website is excellent — severely limits your local visibility. We've helped Southern Oregon businesses go from invisible in local search to ranking in the top 3 within 90 days simply by fully optimizing their GBP.
The investment is minimal: GBP is completely free, and the 15 items in our audit checklist can typically be completed in 2–3 hours. Yet most local businesses only complete 30–40% of these items — leaving significant local search visibility on the table.
Our team handles complete GBP setup and optimization for Southern Oregon businesses — from category selection to photo strategy to review generation. Free consultation included.
Get Free GBP Optimization HelpGoogle Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is a free tool that allows businesses to manage their online presence across Google Search and Google Maps. A complete, optimized GBP listing is one of the most important factors for appearing in local search results and the Google Maps 'Local Pack' — the map results shown at the top of local searches.
GBP is arguably the most important factor for local search visibility. According to Moz's Local Search Ranking Factors survey, GBP signals (category selection, keywords in business description, and completeness) are the #1 factor for Google Maps rankings and the #2 factor for organic local rankings. An unclaimed or incomplete GBP profile significantly limits your local search visibility.
The primary business category is widely considered the single most important GBP field — it determines which searches your business appears for. Choose the most specific, accurate category that describes your primary service. After category, reviews (quantity and quality), photos, and completeness of all profile fields are the next most impactful elements.
Google reviews influence local rankings in three ways: quantity (more reviews = stronger signal), quality (higher star rating = more prominent placement), and recency (recent reviews signal an active, ongoing business). Reviews also appear directly in search results and strongly influence whether potential customers choose to click on your business.
The most effective strategies are: (1) Simply ask satisfied customers — most people don't think to leave reviews unless prompted, (2) Make it easy — send customers a direct link to your GBP review page via text or email, (3) Follow up after service completion, (4) Add a review request to your receipts or invoices, and (5) Respond to every review to show potential reviewers that their feedback is valued.
Posting at least once per week is the industry recommendation. Regular posts keep your profile active and engaging, and some research suggests consistent posting activity positively correlates with local ranking position. Posts expire after 7 days, so maintaining weekly frequency ensures your profile always has fresh content. Share offers, events, new services, and useful tips.
At minimum: a professional logo, a compelling cover photo, exterior photos (so customers can find you), and interior photos (so customers know what to expect). Beyond that, add photos of your team, your work/products, and your equipment. Businesses with 100+ photos reportedly get significantly more views than those with fewer. Add new photos regularly.
Attributes are additional features you can highlight on your GBP profile — things like 'wheelchair accessible entrance', 'free WiFi', 'women-led business', 'credit cards accepted', 'outdoor seating', or 'LGBTQ+ friendly'. They appear as icons on your profile and help potential customers quickly understand what to expect. Selecting all relevant attributes improves your profile completeness.
Yes, service-area businesses that serve customers at the customer's location (plumbers, electricians, house cleaners, etc.) can have a GBP without displaying a home address. Set up your profile as a 'service area business', enter your service areas instead of a street address, and Google will not publicly display your home address while still showing your business in local searches.
Some improvements show results within days to weeks — especially completing an incomplete profile, choosing better categories, and adding photos. Review-related improvements take longer as reviews accumulate over time. Overall, most businesses see measurable improvements in local visibility within 1–3 months of comprehensive GBP optimization.
